| Born in A.D. 37, Josephus was the son of a priest named Matthias and a mother who descended from the royal Jewish family of the Hasmoneans. Evidently he was a precocious lad, for Josephus claims: About age fourteen, I won universal acclaim for my love of letters, so much so that the chief priests and the city leaders regularly came to me for exact information on some particulars in our laws. | |
